The Oxford Martin Commission for Future Generations is a group of 19 international leaders from government, business, academia, media and civil society working to address the growing short-term preoccupations of modern politics and business and identify ways of overcoming today’s gridlock in key international negotiations. Chaired by Pascal Lamy, the former Director-General of the World Trade Organization, the Oxford Martin Commission’s report, Now for the Long Term, is the product of a year-long process and debate on the successes and failures in addressing global challenges over recent decades.
The report calls for a radical shake-up in politics and business to embed long-term thinking, and provides practical recommendations for action in order to create a more resilient, inclusive and sustainable future.
The Oxford Martin Commission’s ‘Agenda for the Long Term’ cuts across the research portfolio of the Oxford Martin School. The core issues it addresses- the worrying prevalence of short-term thinking, and growing gridlock in solving key global challenges- reflect the concerns and frustrations encountered by many of the School’s academics working on 21st century issues ranging from geoengineering to infectious diseases to food security.
The Oxford Martin Commission report drew on the wide-ranging expertise of academics within the School and the University more broadly, many of whom continue to be involved as Commissioners seek to take forward the report’s 15 flagship recommendations.
Since its launch in October 2013, Now for the Long Term has been accessed more than 1 million times online, and has received media coverage in 30 countries across six continents. Events to highlight the report and engage policy makers, businesses, academics and civil society with the work of the Commission have been held around the world, and work is ongoing to take forward the recommendations proposed in the report.

L’Oxford Martin School de l’Université d’Oxford fait le constat d’une vision de plus en plus court-termiste des acteurs politiques et économiques face aux problèmes globaux du XXIème siècle.
L’ « Oxford Martin Commission », qu’elle a initiée, rassemble des personnalités des premier plan sous la présidence de Pascal Lamy.
Les réflexions de l’ensemble de la Commission ont été synthétisées dans le rapport « Now for the Long Term » .
Ce document, publié en 2013, propose un programme d’action concret destiné à éviter de nouvelles crises au niveau global. Il appelle à des transformations d’ampleur notamment pour mieux lutter contre le changement climatique, mieux saisir les menaces liées au monde virtuel, pour assurer des systèmes de santé publique plus efficaces et faire reculer les inégalités économiques. Pointant l’inadéquation de nombreuses institutions internationales aux défis de demain, « Now for the Long Term » souligne la nécessité de considérer l’horizon de long terme, à tous les niveaux, comme la première des priorités.
